The team from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) conducted a graph-based study comparing vaccine and infection for different outcomes for a 3-year period, finding that natural infection leads to strong protection from hospitalization/death. The research was met with criticism (via five concern letters to The Lancet) on inconsistencies, disagreements, and implausible findings. Other research indicated that with each COVID-19 infection, the risk increases, as well as the high rate of community transmission. Vaccination is deemed the safest route to immunity, though natural immunity has its benefits as well regarding T and B cells protecting against severe illness.
