Trans Journalists Association (TransJA) is calling on the New York Times to recognize that their coverage of trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming persons has contributed to harmful narratives with life and death consequences. They are offering a style guide to help journalists and others avoid common pitfalls, and wishing for accurate and respectful writing. Accurate writing includes avoiding deadnaming trans individuals, and giving them the option to change their name without cause or explanation. Retaliation toward trans journalists and those allied with them is being condemned.
