The Calgary Flames selected Carson Carels, a defenseman from the Prince George Cougars in the WHL and incoming University of North Dakota freshman from Cypress River, Manitoba, with the sixth overall pick. Carels watched the draft from his family's beef farm near Cypress River with friends and family. Flames GM Craig Conroy praised Carels as a special player who will be with the team for a long time.
